Sachin Saxena is a former ship captain who spent 13 years navigating the globe on large ships. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sachin Saxena, a 45-year-old former ship captain from Singapore. I captained ships transporting liquid petroleum gas from Asia to the United States for 13 years, from 1997 to 2010. Entering or leaving a port is one of the most challenging parts of any voyage. This will start about 45 seconds after the ship's power has failed.

The couple's tiny house and land as seen from above. AdvertisementI don't live in the Philippines full-time yet but the plan is for us to settle into a house that we build there eventually. Leading up to that, I decided to build a tiny house to see what the experience would be like. The exterior of the couple's tiny house. At that point, we'll live in the tiny house as we build our dream bungalow-style home on the main lot.

Even in the buffet of amenities that New York City private schools offer — state-of-the-art gyms and science labs, black box theaters and greenhouses, bespoke college guidance and dream teacher-to-student ratios — having a museum-caliber James Turrell Skyspace on your rooftop is in a class of its own. On the sixth floor of Friends Seminary, a Quaker school in Manhattan, Turrell, the internationally acclaimed artist who uses light to shape space, has created one of his perception-altering meeting rooms whose roof opens to the sky. Bathed in a spectrum of shifting radiant color, that slice of sky appears to float inside the installation, titled “Leading,” the only one of more than 85 Skyspaces by Turrell around the world attached to an active K-12 school. Sam Lane, a sophomore, was already a Turrell fan from family visits to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, which has nine of the artist’s installations. “Some people were excited, some people were a little weirded out by it — like what does it means to have an art installation at our school this significant?”

Since then, I've worked on 20 different superyachts in Asia, in the Caribbean, and in the Mediterranean. The yachts I've worked on have personal submarines, helipads, and spas. Dinner reservations can fall through, or once they get to the restaurant, the yacht owners may decide the vibes are off and that they no longer want to eat there. But I don't just cook for the owners, the guests, and the crew — sometimes, I cook for the owner's pets. I get my jobs through word of mouth, but to help people who are starting out to connect with other yacht chefs, I launched thesuperyachtchef.com in 2019.
